Did You Know That
The Average Person Reads Only ONE Book Per YEAR!
Let me ask you something.  Do you want to go about the rest of your life being "average?"

To be frankly honest, I don't think I read a single book over a span of about 12 years at one time in my life.  Thanks to some sound advice from several highly successful mentors, I finally "broke" and became an avid reader.

Below you will find the "Best of The Best" reads that I have personally consumed.  Now, I must warn you.  It's one thing to read and learn, and it's an entirely different thing to implement, execute, and to DO what you've learned.

I cannot stress enough the importance of reading quality books.  The key word being "quality."

For YEARS I had literally scoffed at the notion that books could somehow have any kind of significant impact on increasing my level of success.

I'll never forget the very first time that I realized that I had wasted all of those years in guarding this belief.  I was involved with an infomercial company at the time.

I had developed a comprehensive online marketing system (website), and received an invitation from the CEO of the company to fly out and discuss integrating it with his company.  They flew me out from California to Massachusetts.  They had me picked up in a limousine, which promptly whisked me from the airport to my hotel (all paid in full by the company).

Later that day, I arrived at the company headquarters.  I vividly remember being escorted to the CEO's "corner office."  As I entered, I was in awe of the size and extravagance of it.

We proceeded to discuss terms and came upon an agreement in a remarkably short amount of time (this is another trait of highly successful people - they make decisions quickly ... but that's a topic for another time).

Then (and this is the part I'll never forget), he stood up, walked out from behind his desk, and proceeded forward towards a closed floor-to-ceiling double-door cabinet.  He then turned towards me, while simultaneously opening the doors to the cabinet, stating "If only people knew the secret to becoming rich ... all they have to do is read."

And as the doors swung open the contents were revealed.  Shelf after shelf filled with books.  Books about business, about personal development, about success, and on and on.

It was then that I finally BELIEVED the supreme importance of reading books.  Thus began my wondrous, enlightening, and success-breeding journey.  The good news is - Now it's your turn.

I've personally found that "listening" to books was easier and more convenient than reading them. Whenever I'm in my car, I connect my smart phone to the stereo system and listen to books, rather than listen to music. I now affectionately call all of my vehicles "Success on Wheels."

Whatever your preferred method for reading books might be, the one thing I IMPLORE of you is to simply START reading, and start reading now.  Get in the habit of starting each day with 30 minutes to an hour of reading.  What you will find is that your days will be far more productive, far more invigorating, and for more, well, successful.

Below is my gift to you.  It is my personal Library.  These are the VERY books that have had a profound affect on my level of success, both professionally and personally. They are presented below in no particular order.  Read the accompanying descriptions, and then start by picking ONE that stands out to you.  After completing the first book, come back and pick another ... and then another, until you've completed reading the entire Reach Your Peak Library, one book at a time.

I hope you enjoy this journey as much as I have.  And, more importantly, I hope you are impacted as profoundly as I have been by the results generated from consuming, and putting into action, this collection of life-changing education/information.

Sincerely,

Brian Kelly

The Compound Effect
by Darren Hardy

Darren Hardy, publisher and editorial director of Success magazine, presents The Compound Effect, a distillation of the fundamental principles that have guided the most phenomenal achievements in business, relationships, and beyond.

This book is about success and what it really takes to earn it. It’s time someone told it to you straight. You’ve been bamboozled for too long. There is no magic bullet, secret formula, or quick fix. You don’t make $200,000 a year spending two hours a day on the Internet, lose 30 pounds in a week, rub 20 years off your face with a cream, fix your love life with a pill, or find lasting success with any other scheme that is too good to be true. It would be great if you could buy your success, fame, self-esteem, good relationships, and health and well-being in a nicely clam-shelled package at the local Walmart. But that’s not how it works. ...

Start With Why
by Simon Sinek

Why are some people and organizations more innovative, more influential, and more profitable than others? Why do some command greater loyalty from customers and employees alike? Even among the successful, why are so few able to repeat their successes over and over?

People like Martin Luther King Jr., Steve Jobs, and the Wright Brothers might have little in common, but they all started with why. Their natural ability to start with why enabled them to inspire those around them and to achieve remarkable things. In studying the leaders who've had the greatest influence in the world, Simon Sinek discovered that they all think, act, and communicate in the exact same way-and it's the complete opposite of what everyone else does.

Sinek calls this powerful idea The Golden Circle, and it provides a framework upon which organizations can be built, movements can be led, and people can be inspired. And it all starts with WHY.

Built To Sell
by John Warrillow

A business parable about how to create a start-up that won't trap you when you want to sell it. According to John Warrillow, the number one mistake entrepreneurs make is to build a business that relies too heavily on them. Thus, when the time comes to sell, buyers aren't confident that the company-even if it's profitable-can stand on its own. To illustrate this, Warrillow introduces us to a fictional small business owner named Alex who is struggling to sell his advertising agency. Alex turns to Ted, an entrepreneur and old family friend, who encourages Alex to pursue three criteria to make his business sellable:
Teachable: focus on products and services that you can teach employees to deliver.

Valuable: avoid price wars by specializing in doing one thing better than anyone else.

Repeatable: generate recurring revenue by engineering products that customers have to repurchase often.

The Automatic Customer
by Simon Sinek

Why are some people and organizations more innovative, more influential, and more profitable than others? Why do some command greater loyalty from customers and employees alike? Even among the successful, why are so few able to repeat their successes over and over?

People like Martin Luther King Jr., Steve Jobs, and the Wright Brothers might have little in common, but they all started with why. SCRUM
by Jeff Sutherland

By the man who helped invent the red-hot management process known as "Scrum", Scrum unveils what is wrong with the way we currently do work, and how a simple set of principles, applied in exactly the right sequence, can accelerate productivity and quality as much as 1,200 percent.
Scrum (which gets its name from the formation in rugby in which the whole team locks its arms to gain control of the ball) is the reason that Amazon can launch a new feature on its website every day. It's why the Red River Army Depot in Texas was able to roll out armored Humvees 39 times faster than before. It's how the FBI finally created a massive terrorist-tracking database.
The reason for the rapid embrace of Scrum across so many disciplines is simple: organizations that implement Scrum typically double productivity and quality - and sometimes the increase can be as much as 12-fold.
At bottom, Scrum is about coming together with your team, looking at what you're doing, and course correcting. It may be the key to solving some of this era's most intractable problems.

Leaders Eat Last
by Simon Sinek

Why do only a few people get to say "I love my job?" It seems unfair that finding fulfillment at work is like winning a lottery; that only a few lucky ones get to feel valued by their organizations, to feel like they belong.
Imagine a world where almost everyone wakes up inspired to go to work, feels trusted and valued during the day, then returns home feeling fulfilled.
This is not a crazy, idealized notion. Today, in many successful organizations, great leaders are creating environments in which people naturally work together to do remarkable things. In his travels around the world since the publication of his best seller Start with Why, Simon Sinek noticed that some teams were able to trust each other so deeply that they would literally put their lives on the line for each other.

Great leaders sacrifice their own comfort - even their own survival - for the good of those in their care.

The Obstacle Is The Way
by Ryan Holiday

We are stuck, stymied, frustrated. But it needn't be this way. There is a formula for success that's been followed by the icons of history - from John D. Rockefeller to Amelia Earhart to Ulysses S. Grant to Steve Jobs - a formula that let them turn obstacles into opportunities. Faced with impossible situations, they found the astounding triumphs we all seek.
These men and women were not exceptionally brilliant, lucky, or gifted. Their success came from timeless philosophical principles laid down by a Roman emperor who struggled to articulate a method for excellence in any and all situations.
This book reveals that formula for the first time - and shows us how we can turn our own adversity into advantage.

5 Levels of Leadership
by John C. Maxwell

True leadership isn't a matter of having a certain job or title. In fact, being chosen for a position is only the first of the five levels every effective leader achieves. To become more than "the boss" people follow only because they are required to, you have to master the ability to invest in people and inspire them. To grow further in your role, you must achieve results and build a team that produces. You need to help people to develop their skills to become leaders in their own right. And if you have the skill and dedication, you can reach the pinnacle of leadership - where experience will allow you to extend your influence beyond your immediate reach and time for the benefit of others.
The 5 Levels of Leadership are:
1. Position - People follow because they have to.
2. Permission - People follow because they want to.
3. Production - People follow because of what you have done for the organization.
4. People Development - People follow because of what you have done for them personally.
5. Pinnacle - People follow because of who you are and what you represent.

Profit First
by Mike Michalowicz

The author of cult classics The Pumpkin Plan and The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur offers a simple, counterintuitive cash management solution that will help small businesses break out of the doom spiral and achieve instant profitability.
Conventional accounting uses the logical (albeit, flawed) formula: sales - expenses = profit. The problem is, businesses are run by humans, and humans aren't always logical. Serial entrepreneur Mike Michalowicz has developed a behavioral approach to accounting to flip the formula: Sales - Profit = Expenses. Just as the most effective weight loss strategy is to limit portions by using smaller plates, Michalowicz shows that by taking profit first and apportioning only what remains for expenses, entrepreneurs will transform their businesses from cash-eating monsters to profitable cash cows. Using Michalowicz's Profit First system, listeners will learn that:
Following four simple principles can simplify accounting and make it easier to manage a profitable business by looking at bank account balances.

A small, profitable business can be worth much more than a large business surviving on its top line.

Businesses that attain early and sustained profitability have a better shot at achieving long-term growth.

At turns hilarious and inspiring, LIVING WITH A SEAL ultimately shows you the benefits of stepping out of your comfort zone.

Extreme Ownership
by Jocko Willink & Leif Babin

Personal Note: This book was given to me as a gift by fellow entrepreneur Terica Wright after attending one of my Reach Your Peak Meetups in Los Angeles.  Thank you Terica!

In Extreme Ownership, Jocko Willink and Leif Babin share hard-hitting Navy SEAL combat stories that translate into lessons for business and life. With riveting firsthand accounts of making high-pressure decisions as Navy SEAL battlefield leaders, this audiobook is equally gripping for leaders who seek to dominate other arenas.
Jocko and Leif served together in SEAL Task Unit Bruiser, the most highly decorated Special Operations unit from the war in Iraq. Their efforts contributed to the historic triumph for US forces in Ramadi. Through those difficult months of sustained combat, Jocko, Leif, and their SEAL brothers learned that leadership - at every level - is the most important thing on the battlefield. They started Echelon Front to teach these same leadership principles to companies across industries throughout the business world that want to build their own high-performance, winning teams.
This audiobook explains the SEAL leadership concepts crucial to accomplishing the most difficult missions in combat and how to apply them to any group, team, or organization. It provides the listener with Jocko and Leif's formula for success: the mind-set and guiding principles that enable SEAL combat units to achieve extraordinary results. It demonstrates how to apply these directly to business and life to likewise achieve victory.

Blue Ocean Strategy
by W. Chan Kim & Renee Mauborgne

Winning by not competing! This international best seller upends traditional thinking with principles and tools to make the competition irrelevant.
In a book that challenges everything you thought you knew, W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne assert that tomorrow's leading companies will succeed, not by battling their rivals for market share in the bloody "red ocean" of a shrinking profit pool, but by creating "blue oceans" of untapped new market spaces ripe for growth.

· Reconstruct market boundaries

· Reach beyond existing demand
· Get the strategic sequence right
· Overcome organizational hurdles

Who
by Geoff Smart & Randy Street

It's happened to the best of us.

You have a job opening to fill. You interview a range of qualified candidates and hire the best of the bunch-or so you think. You soon realize that the person who seemed like a perfect fit during the interview doesn't have what it takes to do the job

In Who, Geoff Smart and Randy Street, of the management consulting firm ghSmart, combine their experiences training thousands of managers and executives with the most revealing and comprehensive research ever on the subject of how to hire successfully, as well as advice and stories from more than twenty billionaires and sixty CEOs.

The result is a simple, four-step method for hiring with confidence, designed for everyone from the CEO on down. Who shows you how to avoid the most common pitfalls of hiring, how to identify "A Players"-people who can perform their job better than 90 percent of the candidates in their field-and how to make sure the best candidate will be excited to join your organization.

Hiring is every bit as important an element of successful business as other key principles, such as leadership and strategy. Who should be required listening for anyone in a management position.

Total Recall
by Arnold Schwarzenneger

One of the most anticipated autobiographies of this generation, Arnold Schwarzenegger's Total Recall is the candid story of one of the world's most remarkable actors, businessmen, and world leaders.
Born in the small city of Thal, Austria, in 1947, Arnold Schwarzenegger moved to Los Angeles at the age of 21. Within 10 years, he was a millionaire businessman. After 20 years, he was the world's biggest movie star. In 2003, he was elected governor of California and became a household name around the world.
Chronicling his embodiment of the American Dream, Total Recall covers Schwarzenegger's high-stakes journey to the United States, from creating the international bodybuilding industry out of the sands of Venice Beach, to breathing life into cinema's most iconic characters, and becoming one of the leading political figures of our time. Proud of his accomplishments and honest about his regrets, Schwarzenegger spares nothing in sharing his amazing story.
